Sapienza's mission at Çuka e Ajtoit funded as part of the Grandi Scavi Sapienza programme

As of 2025, the Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Albania is funded as part of the Grandi Scavi Sapienza programme.

For forty years, the Grandi Scavi have represented one of Sapienza’s most significant research initiatives. The Grandi Scavi initially consisted of a limited number of research projects of exceptional importance; over time they have grown and today include a large number of scientific missions, involving numerous faculty, researchers and students. The excavations cover a very broad geographical area (Italy, the Near and Middle East, East Africa and the Sahara) and span an extremely wide chronological range, from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, constituting an exceptional body of knowledge that places Sapienza in a position of excellence in the field of archaeology. This is confirmed by international recognitions and the University’s excellent standing in major university rankings.

Beyond the essential financial support that allows us to continue our fieldwork, this is an important recognition of the work carried out in the field over these years (2021-2024) by a significant number of colleagues, collaborators, doctoral candidates and students at every level (from undergraduate to specialisation school), who with tireless commitment, passion, dedication and professionalism have carried out and continue to carry out this research. To them goes the Mission’s most sincere and heartfelt thanks.
