[AY 25-26] Digital Archaeology Teaching Labs 2025-2026: GIS, Advanced GIS and Databases

Registration is now open for the Digital Archaeology Teaching Labs for the 2025-2026 academic year, organised by LAD: the Digital Archaeology Lab at Sapienza, in collaboration with the Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Albania; they aim to provide the theoretical and practical foundations needed to set up and independently develop your own GIS projects and to engage with the world of digital cartography and the graphic processing of archaeological monument surveys.

The labs will be held in person at Sapienza Università di Roma, Aula IV, on the first floor of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy building (CU003), on 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 January and 2, 3 February 2026, from 14:00 to 18:00.

Registration

To register, you need to fill in the Google Form, available at the following address, by 6 January 2026: https://forms.gle/4cp6E68HWByVV8Ff7.

Please note: the form will only accept responses from authenticated users of the @uniroma1.it and @studenti.uniroma1.it domains. For any specific needs, please write to julian.bogdani@uniroma1.it

Each module will have a maximum of 50 participants

Eligibility

The lab is exclusively reserved for students enrolled in the PhD in Archaeology and the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage at Sapienza.

CFU

Where applicable, attendance of all modules of the lab entitles participants to a certificate of attendance that can be used to obtain 2 CFU, to be recorded with the relevant contact person for each degree programme. Additional hours of independent work can be arranged to obtain further CFU.

Other important information

The classroom is not equipped with computers, so participants are required to bring their own.

It is strongly recommended to have a mouse available for the lab activities.

QGIS will be used for the lab activities — free and open-source software supported by the most widely used operating systems (Windows, MacOS, and various Linux distributions). It is recommended to download and install the latest LTR (Long Term Release) from the official page, which is currently 3.40 Bratislava.

Finally, participants must have access to Sapienza WiFi or Eduroam, both available in the classroom.
