Registration open for the 2025 campaign of the Sapienza Archaeological Mission in Albania (June 2025)

The 2025 campaign of excavations and archaeological research of the Albanian Archaeological Mission at Çuka e Ajtoit in Albania will last approximately four weeks, in a period indicatively between 9 June and 6 July 2025.

Fieldwork activities will include archaeological survey, excavation, and documentation, both topographic and of the materials recovered.

The excavation will focus in particular on a semi-private domestic context of the Hellenistic period (3rd-2nd centuries BC) and a Byzantine-period church (12th-13th centuries AD), the so-called Basilica, while the surveys will cover the entire surface of the archaeological site and sites of archaeological interest in the surrounding area.

For more details on the mission’s scientific activities, please refer to the page dedicated to the activities carried out so far.

Practical information

The site of Çuka e Ajtoit is located in southern Albania and is easily reachable from Italy by plane (to Tirana, with Wizz Air, Ryanair, Ita Airways, etc. connections) and bus (Tirana – Konispol), or by plane to Corfu (Greece, with Ryanair connections) and then by boat to Saranda.

To travel to Albania, Italian, European and many other citizens do not need a passport — a valid identity card for travel abroad is sufficient.

The Mission covers all food and lodging expenses on site.
