Conference “Landscape 3: a synthesis of diachronic elements”, Bologna-Ravenna, 5-6 May 2022

“Landscape: a synthesis of diachronic elements” is an initiative launched by PhD students in Ancient Topography and related fields, in synergy with the Consulta di Topografia Antica, with the aim of connecting young researchers working on topics relating to landscape, cities and the environment in antiquity, in order to stimulate the circulation and exchange of ideas on these themes.

Each edition takes place in a different location, addressing topics that can also be reflected in current affairs, in an effort to foster their understanding.

The first edition was held at the University of Pisa, the second at the University of Foggia, and the next one will take place at the University of Bologna from 5 to 6 May 2022.

The third edition of Landscape will therefore attempt to investigate the level of ecological awareness of ancient societies, highlighting the political and economic choices made in moments of transformation, particularly environmental transformation, and how these were perceived.

We know that designing an eco-sustainable world, able to coexist with the surrounding environment while respecting ecological balances, is one of the challenges facing contemporary communities — it is no coincidence that it is among the guidelines of Horizon 2020. Could the choices of ancient societies also, at times, have been shaped by considerations of the environment and the resources available?

The final goal of this year’s conference will be to give concrete shape to this question through the experiences and research results presented by the participants.
