[AY 23-24] Digital Archaeology teaching labs 2022-2023: GIS, Advanced GIS, Databases

Registration is now open for the Digital Archaeology teaching labs, organised as part of the Archaeological Research Methodology, Digital Archaeology and Digital Humanities courses, in collaboration with the ERC Advanced PAThs project and the Sapienza archaeological mission in Albania, which aim to provide the theoretical and practical foundations needed to set up and independently develop your own GIS projects and to engage with the world of digital cartography and the creation and management of online databases (DB, SQL and BraDypUS).

The labs will be held in person at Sapienza Università di Roma, Aula III multimediale, on the first floor of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy building (CU003), on 27, 28 April and 4, 5, 11, 12 May 2023.

Calendar

  • Basic GIS module (14 15 hours):
    • 27 April, 13:00-18:00
    • 28 April, 13:00-18:00
    • 4 May, 13:00-17:00 18:00
  • Relational databases module (5 hours):
    • 5 May, 13:00-18:00
  • Advanced GIS module (5 hours):
    • 11 May, 13:00-18:00
  • Introduction to completing the Preventive Assessment of Archaeological Interest form (VPIA) according to the ICA model module (6 hours):
    • 12 May, 13:00-19:00

Registration

To register for the labs, you need to fill in the Google Form at the link https://forms.gle/zPH9PBXnap3w9uzf7.

Each module will have a maximum of 50 participants

Eligibility

The lab is open to interested students at any level (bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate) enrolled at Sapienza Università di Roma. No prior knowledge of or experience with GIS platforms and databases is required. For the advanced module and for the Preventive Archaeology module, participation in the basic module, or in any case a good working knowledge of QGIS, is required.

CFU

The four modules, totalling 26 hours, lead to a certificate of attendance that can be used to obtain 1 CFU, to be recorded with the relevant contact person for each degree programme. Additional hours of independent work can be arranged to obtain further CFU.
